All things ‘Green’ in London

leaf harvest

The FOOD from the SKY team were at the London Green Fair on Saturday spreading the story of roof-top gardening and selling some of our lovely ultra-locally grown plants and salad. On offer were: tomatoes, chillies, calendula, borage, courgette, and strawberries. We had a nice spot at the end of the Capital Growth stall, where some other growing spaces were also selling plants…

It was great to see some interesting varieties for sale such as Vietnamese coriander and tree spinach, a cousin of our infamous red mountain spinach (or orache), which we learnt from a local herbalist happens to be a super-food, packed full of health giving antioxidants.

Although the day started off extremely windy, with leaflets and other lightweight objects sporadically flying off the stall and having to be chased around the park, by the afternoon the sun shone through and what a lovely evening it turned out to be.

We were based in the Permaculture area where there were many interesting activities going on such as scything workshops and bird-box building, as well as many interesting talks, including some by our friend Hedvig Murray who will be teaching as part of this month’s Seed2seed session at FOOD from the SKY – which is an Introduction to Permaculture, taking place this coming Saturday (16th). If you are interested in attending this course you can find more information here. Or to book email sarah@foodfromthesky.org.uk.

Happening this week at FOOD from the SKY:

Wednesday – volunteers work day with Sarah…10am-1pm. Please bring comfortable clothes, strong shoes, and weather appropriate clothing.

Friday – harvest and work day with Jack…9am-4pm. Please bring the same as above! More hands are needed for harvest, so if you can get there early that would be great. For the next 3 weeks, we’re offering a FREE bag of salad for harvest volunteers (required to come from 9am-1pm) Otherwise, we welcome volunteers anytime during the day – no obligation to stay for the whole day.

Saturday – Seed2seed course: Introduction to Permaculture by Hedvig Murray 10am-3pm. We still have a couple of places available, so if you’re interested in attending, email sarah@foodfromthesky.org.uk to book.

Ooh, maybe I should have bought the tree spinach! I did buy some orache from the herb stall, and a courgette plant from you.
