Runner Beans – ideal for the beginner gardener
- Runner beans prefer a position in full sun, however they tolerate part shade well also.

- Runner beans grow to about 6 ft high and they definitely need support. The idea is to provide a structure which their tendrils can grow round. It’s helpful to twist some gardening twine round the bamboo canes, this will give the growing plants more to grab hold of. You can also grow up and existing fence which has been covered with mesh netting.
- They need basic care: water, weeding and possibly feeding. Mulching around the base of the plants will help accomplish these three aspects.
- Runner beans should be ready for picking in July. Harvest pods when they are 15-20 in length (longer pods are tough and stringy) every 2-3 days. Pick thoroughly as any ripe pods left on the plant will inhibit further production.
